Ok, so I’m back to the blog . . . finally :-) As you can imagine, between learning how to be a Mom, sleepless nights, tons of visitors, it's been a bit tough getting time to sit down and write. But, better late than never though, right?! So, after our beautiful guy was born, I was told that I better try to feed him right away because newborns usually fall into a deep sleep for 12-24 hours about 1 hour after they are born. I had already planned to try to feed him immediately and was so excited that I thought I could stare at our precious baby boy all night. Well . . . that is until the sheer exhaustion of not having slept the night before (well, to be honest, for several months before) and having gone through a whole day of labor set in. As much as I was absolutely in love with Devin, I was simply beat. Too bad that Devin had different plans for us. Not only did he not fall into that “deep” sleep and allow us to get some rest, but he was wide awake all night and through the morning! I think he fell asleep for the first time about 9 or 10 hours after he was born, and only for a short while.
And, since neither me or Devin had yet gotten the hang of nursing, we spent a majority of the night and morning completely frustrated---him because he was hungry and wasn’t getting anything to eat and me because I was doing everything that I had read and learned in my classes, but he still wouldn’t latch. The main problem was that he developed this habit of sucking his bottom lip while in the womb in order to soothe himself, and he couldn’t figure out how to put his bottom lip out. It’s completely adorable, except for the fact that it interferes with his eating. In any event, he has slowly gotten used to having his lower lip out of his mouth so he can eat thanks to the pediatrician’s advice to begin using a pacifier despite the fact that this goes against all feeding advice. But, he definitely still has a bad habit of doing this, so we’ll be checking with the pediatrician for ideas to break the habit entirely.
Well, by the time that Devin fell asleep, it was time for us to get up, eat, shower and get ready for our visitors! We had several family members and friends come to meet our little guy that day, and we loved it! Unfortunately, we didn't get pics of everyone. But, here are a few:

Lucky for Devin, Shashin masa was working at Troy Beaumont the day after Devin was born! |
Devin's Meghan masi came to meet him and brought the most beautiful blue orchids! |
Devin's Ba and Nani can't get enough of him! |
Here's one of Devin's big cousins, Anjali, coming to see him for the first time. |
Nani and Nana just love Devin! |
Devin also had some testing and vaccines as well as his circumcision procedure. He was a total champ! Oh, and on a side note, my mother in law works in the food services department of the hospital (which now has a “room service” style meal service where you can just order whatever food you want . . . and it’s good food), so we were definitely hooked up all day!
Loved this adorable cupcake! |
By that evening, I had only slept 1.5 hours in 2 days, so as much as it made me feel guilty to do, I took my girlfriends’ advice and sent Devin to the nursery for a few hours so that I could get a few hours of sleep. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing.
The next day was Friday, July 15th, which was my actual due date, and it was time for us to head home from the hospital. But, just before we left, Devin had some newborn pictures taken by Bella Baby Photography right in the hospital room. I had no idea that the photographer would want Vikas and me to be in some of the pictures, otherwise I would have done my hair that morning! At least we both happened to be wearing black shirts, so that worked out. Below are a few of our favorite pictures. We did have a separate newborn shoot set up with Kelly Rama of MAK Photography for August 6th, but we liked the Bella Baby pictures so much that we decided to order them too :-)
In love with our little guy! |
Our family of three! |
Beautiful baby boy :-) |
I have to tell you, even as excited as we were to be taking Devin home, the fact that we were parents had not quite sunken in yet. We both had a moment where we looked at each other and were both thinking the same thing: “Are they seriously trusting us to leave this hospital alone with this beautiful baby?! We have no idea what we are doing!” But, then again, no first time parents know what they are doing, so we figured that we'd just figure it out just like everyone else. I'd like to think that we're pretty competent people . . . lol! I'm sure we'll be ok :-)
All ready to head home in his little frog outfit and hat :-) |
