The day after we left the hospital, we had our first doctors appointment at Mali & Mali pediatrics. When we were in the hospital, we had seen Dr. Youn and Dr. Groebe, two of the six doctors at the practice. This time, we saw a different one. We were pretty sure we’d want to go with Vik Mali (“Dr. Vik”) since he came so highly recommended, had great credentials (he was formerly the Chief of Pediatrics at Beaumont), and was male. But, we decided that it made sense to meet all of the doctors to see who we liked the best. This time, we saw Dr. Kalo for Devin’s first peds appointment.

The main reason for the appointment was to monitor Devin’s weight. Unfortunately, Devin had lost 9 ounces in the 3 days since he was born and was only 6lbs, 5 oz. Since he had lost over 10% of his body weight, I needed to supplement nursing with formula for 2 days until my milk came in and then we’d re-check his weight. The goal was for him to gain one ounce per day. Our little peanut gained 3 ounces per day! So, when we went back and met Dr. Sloan (our favorite doc so far), Devin was 6 lbs, 11 oz. She was extremely happy with his weight gain, and since my milk had come in, gave me the green light to stop supplementing with formula and nurse exclusively.
Nine days later, we went in for Devin’s 2 week appointment. We were told that the goal at this appointment is to get back to the original birth weight (6 lbs, 14 oz). So, basically he only needed to gain 3 ounces from the five day appointment. Well, guess what?! Our little man gained one pound since the five day appointment and he grew 1.5 inches!!!! Talk about exceeding expectations! As of that visit, Devin was in the 75% for height and only 20 or 25% for weight (still just a peanut). Since nursing hasn’t exactly been a breeze for us (understatement), I was so glad that he was growing so well and got the reassurance that I needed to stick it out with nursing.
Our next appointment was on August 12th, and Devin once again blew Dr. Sloan’s expectations out of the water! In two weeks, he gained another whole pound and grew half an inch! As of now, he is 22 inches long (71% for height) and 8lbs, 11oz (25% for weight)—tall and thin, just like his papa! His next appointment is in a month. I’m definitely not looking forward to this one. Devin will be getting the first of his many vaccines at this appointment, and I can only imagine how hard it will be to hear him cry and not be able to soothe him. But, I know it’s for his own good, so I’ll get through it . . . but it will still be rough :-(
